Carpet Style that Suits you
Walking into a carpet showroom can be overwhelming. There are many types and style. Though numerous carpet choices are available, there are basically only two styles of carpet. The loop pile and cut pile. With these two major styles comes the Cut and Loop Pile Carpet. The names loop, cut pile and, Cut and Loop Pile Carpet gives a bit of insight into how they are constructed.
The Cut Pile Carpet
Cut pile carpet is created when the loops that result from weaving are cut and allowed to slightly tuft, giving the carpet a dense, soft appearance. In this style, the loops are actually cut so that there are individual ends sticking up through the backing. If you ran the same pin through there the pin would lift right up. It is like a sheer cut pile.
Cut pile carpets are incredibly luxurious underfoot, in fact, they’re currently the most popular carpet style. Depending on the fiber type, some cut pile carpets show footprints called tracking and plusher cuts can show permanent shading, which you can read more about in our carpet care section. A quick tip – if you have cats that like to scratch or claw the floor, a cut pile carpet is your best option.
The Loop Pile Carpet
If you leave the carpet in its woven form, it is a loop carpet. Loop style carpets leave the loops uncut for a continuous surface that resists crushing and matting. All that this means is that the carpet consists of a bunch of loops of fiber attached to the backing. There can be many variations of loop carpet including textured loop, multi-level loop, and special loop styles.
Loop Pile Carpet is known for their excellent durability and unmatched resistance to stain, meaning, this is good for areas with high traffic. Unlike the cut pile style, loop pile carpets generally have a smooth, flatter texture, so they do not easily show signs of tracking. One disadvantage of having loop pile carpets, though, is the likelihood of the strands to run if something pulled a looped fiber. Therefore, if you have cats or dogs who want to scratch surfaces, you should reconsider getting loop pile carpets.
Cut and Loop Pile Carpet
Cut and loop pile carpets, as you would have already guessed, are carpets that have piles of both loop and cut fibers. This carpet type has a unique look as cut and loop piles can give a special texture to the appearance of the carpet. Cut and loop pile carpets can be quite expensive, though. Another downside is that some cut and loop pile carpets can develop a matted appearance even when they are fairly new.
With all of these carpeting options, it’s important to determine your specific needs based on the rooms you are planning to carpet. If you want to give your room a look of elegance and don’t plan on a lot of traffic (possibly a dining room or living room), going with a cut pile carpet would be a great bet. If you are looking for something more durable for a family room or playroom, you should take a look at Berber carpet.
Aside from your preference and style, your budget, the area you’ll use it for, as well as the people (or pets) you would be living with must be taken into account before choosing between cut pile, loop pile, or cut and loop pile carpets. A reputable carpet salesperson will be able to guide you through the process, but a little knowledge goes a long way in getting the right product for your needs.
